Physical Description: He looks like Colin Farrell but before Colin Farrell looked like he lived on the street and had meth for breakfast.
Character's Species/Race: Human

Character History:
Matt was born and raised in a small village near Dublin in Ireland. His parents Michael and Sheila are staunchly catholic and as such he was brought up that way too. He has three sisters, Catherine (28), Rebecca (21) and Aoife (11).

From a young age, Matt always enjoyed music, saving up his pocket money to buy a second hand keyboard. He taught himself to play. When he was at school he had a lot of friends, used to like to play rugby and do Things Men Do.
Like women. He always respected them though, and as he grew up, even though his cheeky ways allowed him to get away with a lot, he had a strong moral code, in part instilled by his upbringing, and the fact he was surrounded by women at home.

His friends liked to rib him a little, making fun of the fact that instead of go on a lads holiday, he wanted to save up for a piano. But he got used to it.

As he got older, however, his different interests caused problems at home. His dad wanted him to go and work at his garage, but Matt wanted to go to university and study music. His dad, as so many times in his youth, unfortunately thought the best way to deal with a difference of opinion was with the back of his hand, or sometimes a belt.
Despite the family arguments, Matt went to university, more determined than ever to prove his family wrong, and show that he could achieve his dreams. He moved to London and quickly got into the flow of things there, with the life he’d wanted for years; he loved every minute of it.

In London he met Nathan who was studying art at the same university and resident in the same halls. Nathan was gay and gave no fucks whatsoever about being out and proud; Matt had never really known anybody gay before, not from his little quiet town, and it was hardly the circles he moved in. In fact, his friends (and definitely his family) were incredibly homophobic, and he’d been known to indulge in homophobic jeers himself simply because he didn’t really know better. That said, Matt and Nathan became firm friends very quickly (‘mate I don’t care what you stick it in as long as it’s not me’). By the end of their first year, the pair of friends decided to get a flat together to save money.

Not long after moving to London Matt got a job in a bar to earn a little extra to get through his studies. Shortly into his he second year he met Sally who he became quickly enamoured with. She loved his attention, and he loved giving it. Within about a month he’d all but moved her into the flat he shared with Nathan, and less than two months after that, much to all his friends telling him it was a bad idea, he proposed. As their relationship went on, Sally began to get more and more controlling, she put Matt down and argued with him at any given opportunity, their relationship was doomed to fail from the start but still he kept trying. His family loved her, he thought he loved her too. It was almost two years later to the day when it finally failed after he’d spent a night out with a female friend and Sally accused him of cheating. It would be fair to say it exploded.

It’s there where he went off the rails.

Nathan had always had a bit of a thing for Matt, but it had never gone anywhere, and nor had he expected it to. When everything failed with Sally, Matt got a bit cruel and unkind, and to Nathan especially. But they do say you always hurt the people you love most. He’d spend his nights getting drunk, out in bars, bringing back women –and a different one each night-- . It got so bad that Nathan eventually called him on it, to which Matt accused him of being jealous as it’s only because he doesn’t have him. The argument was pretty huge, and it didn’t end there, out with friends Matt began making fun of Nathan, pointing out how much Nathan wanted him, that the only reason he was single was because he was waiting for him. He knew it was cruel, and though Nathan always shrugged it off, he knew it hurt him, yet for some reason he didn’t stop.
Matt’s behaviour continued, and more erratically so, on the verge of throwing away his career he’d worked so hard for. Again it took an intervention and an argument from Nathan to make anything change. But this argument was a little different, and this one ended with them both in bed. Really, it had been coming for a long time. In the morning, horrified by what had taken place, Matt left. It was a week later when he returned, and he pretended nothing had happened at all.

He carried on in his ways, not as bad as at the start, but still with a different woman each night (as if he was trying to make some sort of point). But more than once in a drunken haze and under a huge cloud of denial, he would allow a man to perform sex acts on him, under the pretence of ‘a mouth is a mouth’. Smooth. A few weeks later at a pub with friends, and another gay taunt from Matt issued to Nathan, Nathan had had enough, and he revealed to everyone what had taken place between them. That night, Nathan ended up in hospital after Matt beat him up in the alley outside the bar.

It was a long time after that before the pair saw each other again, Matt too ashamed of what he’d done to hurt his best friend in so many ways. It was about a year later when Matt saw an advertisement for an art show with Nathan’s name all over it that he decided to go. It was there he saw Nathan looking happy with his now partner. Only then did he really realise why he behaved the way he did before, and how he really felt (and always had felt) for Nathan. The fear of the moment made him leave, but he hadn’t realised Nathan had seen him. About a week later, Matt was part of a big show, his first solo and quite a big deal. Nathan was in the front row. That evening, they had the talk they’d needed for a long time.
They’ve been friends again ever since.

Matt continues to live in London, and is currently in talks with record companies for releasing a classical piano album.

He still says he’s not gay.

OH ALSO:

He went to primary school with Elinor Cailte who he also shared his first kiss with when he was about 8 years old, then again when they were about 11. But he hasn't seen her since school.

He might also be somehow related to Andrew, because Irish people, right?

MORE ALSO:

Nathan (or Nate to Matt)'s PB is the beautiful Aneurin Barnard and should probably exist in the game because look at him.

Personality and Psychology:
Matt is a bit of a lad, but despite being pretty much a walking, talking Irish stereotype, he tries hard to fight against it. In many ways he’s a bit of a contradiction of sorts.

Growing up, Matt was surrounded by his sisters, and as such as he got older he would always be the guy on the women’s side. It was maybe that that taught him how to get girls, because it turns out they like it when you’re nice to them. Funny that.

He’s very loyal and very strong willed. He’ll support his friends as strongly as he can. Or he will at least until it all goes wrong. When his friend visited his native Ireland with him and was met with taunts he had no qualms in standing up to them, even to his rather scary father.

Beneath his strong bravado he has a real family spirit, and a desperate desire to make them proud. It’s what pushes him to go further, to prove he can be everything they hope he can be, even if he doesn’t chose the paths they might want him to. It’s likely also why he fell so deeply into a relationship with Sally, even if deep down he knew it wasn’t right for him. If he makes his family happy, maybe he’s actually achieved something.

Most people likely make first impressions about Matt that aren’t quite right; usually surprised when they find he’s a pianist, and that there’s maybe a bit more to him than the swearing and pint in his hand. But in part it’s a role he plays on purpose, another way of concealing away his real emotion, because who needs that, right? He knows he certainly doesn’t.

Until he moved away, Matt lived a very blinkered life. His family and his friends saw very little of the world, and so their view on it was very small and often unpleasant. He too held the same views, until as he got older he started to realise they were perhaps wrong. It was something he struggled with, because he looked up to his Mother especially as an Authority on Everything. The thought that she might not quite be right was almost disturbing. Its still something he struggles with now, where he might often default to the sort of humour his dad might indulge in. He has to stop himself to realise it’s wrong.

Sometimes, Matt really isn’t a very nice person at all. He’s not very good at dealing with emotion (thanks dad), and so instead of try he tends to lash out, either verbally or sometimes even physically. The latter terrifies him the most, because the last person he wants to end up as is his father. He has a sharp wit but a sharp tongue too, and he can often say things quite hurtful. He regrets them later, but he’s terrible at apologies, choosing instead to lash out further instead of actually say sorry.

Matt is really very charismatic. He knows how to get in peoples good books (and into their beds), and his charm tends to let him get away with things most people wouldn’t, he womanises but somehow they never seem to leave less than pleased.

Matt is adamant he isn’t gay. The very idea of being gay has caused a lot of mental anguish and a lot of nights on the business end of a pint. He will continue to be adamant to the point of violence should people claim otherwise.

Matt is probably gay.

Powers and Abilities:
Matt is a really pretty spectacularly good pianist. Also, he mixes a good cocktail.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession): No.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights?
Because why not, basically. His life is a bit stagnant, things he hoped might happen didn't, and he's not really sure how to go forward. He's still close to Nathan but constantly reminded of their murky past. A new start might be a good thing.

Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character? Nah. But it might be nice to have his arrival be an in-game thing? idk.
